Ask the Right Question

The alarm rings…it’s 5:30am. You groan as you press snooze. “I should get up,” you think, “I will regret not getting up.” Your eyes slowly flutter closed and within seconds, the alarm goes off again. “Ugh” you sigh. Not today. You reset the alarm for 6:45am and head back to bed. When you’re finally up, you take your time through showering and doing your hair and suddenly realize you need to be out the door in 15 minutes. No time to make breakfast, again. You rush to feed the animals, pack your lunch, and make a coffee before sprinting out the door.

Sound familiar? It sure does to me. If you’ve lived out this rushed morning, not following through on plans you set the night before, you may often find yourself frustrated…with yourself. You try so often to establish new routines…to move your body in the morning, journal, make a healthy breakfast. You want to be mindful and present and wake yourself up with intention so that when you head to work for the day, you’re not flustered. But something keeps getting in your way. It’s that extra hour or so of sleep…it is sacred and it cannot be budged.

But what if it could? Having a fruitful morning routine is difficult to start if you’re a serial snoozer. So maybe you don’t start with the morning routine? We can get so stuck in the latest fads. The Pinterest posts that promise their set of tactics is going to give you the best morning ever. We see people on Instagram posting the sunrise and their beautiful açaí bowls before we’ve even gotten out of bed. We are desperate to be those people. But I can almost bet you, those people have a lot more in place than just a morning routine.

So let’s take a step back. Let’s stop thinking so granular. And let’s find out who you are.

What an existential question right? I would say this is THE question. The question you need to answer before you can take any steps forward. I promise you, it’s not so hard to determine. When I say who are you, I mean who are you right now? In this moment? What matters to you? What values do you have? What are your goals? What are you dreams? What have you gone through that has gotten you to now? What successes have you had?

Once you get clear on these questions, you can begin to think next steps. Once you know who you are, you might realize you don’t even need to be a morning person! Or perhaps once you know who you are, you will finally find the fuel that will help you get there.

Clarity is key when it comes to setting goals. We can’t achieve goals that we set just because the person on Instagram is doing it. We need to set them based on knowing who we are, why it’s important to us, and how to leverage our strengths to get us there.

Unsure how to take the next step? That’s what I’m here for.
